Investment in Vietnam reaches nearly 5.45 billion USD in the first quarter of 2023

The Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment has reported that as of March 20, 2023, the total newly registered, adjusted and contributed capital, and capital used for purchasing shares and capital contributions by foreign investors reached nearly $5.45 billion, equal to 61.2% compared to the same period last year.

There were 522 new investment projects granted investment registration certificates, up 62.1% compared to the same period last year, with total registered capital reaching over $3 billion, down 5.9% compared to the same period last year.

According to the Foreign Investment Agency, the reason for the decrease in newly registered capital in Q1/2023 compared to the same period last year was due to the fact that in March 2022, the Lego Manufacturing Vietnam Co., Ltd project had registered capital of over $1.3 billion, accounting for 41% of the total newly registered capital in the first three months of 2022.

In Q1/2023, there were 228 projects registering capital adjustment, up 2.6% compared to the same period last year, with total registered capital increasing to over $1.2 billion, down 70.3% compared to the same period last year.

The decrease in adjusted capital in Q1 compared to the same period last year was due to the fact that in the first three months of 2022, there were many projects with large capital adjustment of over $50 million, accounting for 81% of the total adjusted capital of the first three months of 2022. Meanwhile, in the first three months of 2023, there were fewer projects with capital adjustments over $50 million, accounting for only 37.8% of the total adjusted capital.

Regarding capital contributions and share purchases, there were 440 instances of capital contributions by foreign investors, up 10% compared to the same period last year, with a total capital contribution value of nearly $797.9 million, up 3.7% compared to the same period last year.

Although the statistics show a sharp decrease in registered capital, the actual capital implementation of foreign investment projects is estimated to reach over $4.3 billion, only a 2.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2022.

In terms of foreign investment in the first three months of 2023, the Foreign Investment Agency believes that the actual capital implementation of foreign investment projects has decreased compared to the same period last year but has improved compared to the first two months of 2023 (a 2.2% decrease compared to the same period last year and a 2.7 percentage point increase compared to the first two months of 2023).

In addition, the structure of foreign investment capital by investment component has changed compared to the same period in 2022. In the first three months of 2023, the proportion of newly registered capital in total registered capital increased (accounting for over 55.5% compared to 36% in the same period in 2022), while the proportion of adjusted capital decreased (accounting for 22.2% compared to 45.6% in the same period last year). The proportion of capital contributions and share purchases by foreign investors slightly increased from 18.3% in the first three months of 2022 to... (the rest of the sentence is missing).
